How Motor Log AI handles account, vehicle, VIN, photo, reminder, and subscription information in the iOS app and on this website.

Last updated: August 15, 2026

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how Motor Log AI (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and shares information when you use:

  • The Motor Log AI iOS app (the “App”)
  • Our website at https://getmotorlog.com (the “Site”)

The App is an iOS product. We do not currently offer an Android app.

By using the App or Site, you acknowledge this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the App or Site.

2. Snapshot of what the App collects

Depending on how you use the App, we may collect:

We do not use App Tracking Transparency, IDFA, or third-party advertising tracking in the App. We do not sell your personal information.

3. Information we collect in detail

Account and identity

  • Sign in with Apple or Google through Firebase Authentication. We receive identifiers those providers share (typically name and email, based on the permissions you grant) and a Firebase user ID.
  • We do not receive your Apple or Google password.

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

If you type a VIN or scan it with the camera, we store it on your vehicle profile and may send it to:

  • NHTSA vPIC to decode year / make / model and related specs
  • NHTSA recall APIs to look up open recalls
  • Anthropic (through our backend) when you use Pro AI features, as part of the vehicle context

VIN is optional. You can add a vehicle with year, make, and model instead.

Camera and photos

  • Camera is used to scan a VIN barcode or VIN text. Camera access is optional; you can type the VIN or enter vehicle details manually.
  • Photos you choose may include a vehicle cover photo stored on-device and in Firebase Storage (users/{your user id}/vehicles/{vehicle id}/photos/…).
  • Older accounts may still have tire photos and tread-life estimates from a prior in-app check. That analysis flow is no longer offered. Any remaining tire photos are stored the same way until you remove the vehicle or delete your account.

We do not use your camera or photo library for advertising.

Maintenance and garage content you provide

  • Vehicle profile details (year, make, model, trim, mileage, driving usage, notes)
  • Maintenance tasks, checklist completions, service history, and related notes
  • Component-life information you log (for example oil, tires, battery dates or mileage)
  • In-app notification history related to reminders

Push notification tokens

If you enable maintenance reminders, we collect:

  • The Apple Push Notification service (APNs) device token
  • A Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) registration token

We store tokens with your account so our Cloud Functions can deliver lock-screen reminders. You can disable reminders in the App and in iOS Settings.

Motor Log Pro / payments

If you start a trial or purchase Motor Log Pro, we receive subscription and entitlement metadata needed to unlock Pro (plan, vehicle caps, product identifiers, expiration / renewal status, and billing identifiers).

Payment card numbers are processed by Apple (in-app StoreKit purchases) and, for optional web checkout, by RevenueCat Web Billing. We do not store full card numbers on our servers.

AI feature inputs (Pro)

When you use AI-assisted features (vehicle research when adding a car, DIY insights, owner/community insights, overview insights), we send the relevant vehicle and task context — which may include VIN, year/make/model, mileage, and the maintenance item you asked about — to Anthropic through our Firebase Cloud Functions. We do not embed third-party AI API keys in the App. AI features require an active Pro subscription.

Technical and usage data

  • Standard app and device diagnostics needed to operate Firebase Auth, Firestore, Storage, Cloud Messaging, and Cloud Functions
  • Paywall presentation and purchase analytics from RevenueCat as needed to operate subscriptions (when RevenueCat is configured)
  • On-device preferences stored in iOS UserDefaults (for example reminder and display settings)
  • On the Site: typical web logs such as IP address, browser type, pages viewed, and similar hosting analytics

Website contact form

If you submit the contact form on the Site, we collect the name, email address, topic, and message you provide so we can respond. We also apply rate limits that use your IP address to prevent abuse.

4. How we use information

We use this information to:

  • Create and secure your account and sync your garage across devices
  • Decode a VIN you provide and look up recalls
  • Provide maintenance schedules, checklists, reminders, and DIY guidance
  • Store and display photos you upload
  • Show optional vehicle illustrations
  • Enforce Free / Pro plan limits and restore purchases
  • Operate AI-assisted features described above
  • Send the push reminders you enable
  • Respond to messages you send through the Site contact form
  • Improve reliability, prevent abuse, and comply with law

5. How we share information (named processors)

We do not sell your personal information. We share information with service providers that process it on our behalf:

  • Google Firebase (Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Storage, Cloud Messaging, Cloud Functions) — account, garage data, photos, push delivery, and our AI proxy
  • Google Sign-In / Sign in with Apple — identity providers you choose
  • Anthropic — AI model inference for research and insight features (via our backend; not called directly from the App with an API key)
  • Apple — in-app purchase processing for Motor Log Pro (StoreKit / App Store)
  • RevenueCat — subscription management, entitlement linking, optional paywall presentation, and optional Web Billing checkout
  • NHTSA (U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) — VIN decode and recall lookup using the VIN or year/make/model you supply
  • Imagin Studio — optional vehicle illustration images. The App requests a studio image using year, make, model, body style, and fuel type. We do not send your name, email, VIN, or photos to Imagin Studio.
  • Upstash Redis — rate limiting, Car Insights response cache, and contact form messages on the Site
  • Resend — optional email delivery of Site contact form messages
  • Hosting and analytics vendors that power the Site

We may also disclose information when required by law, to protect safety or security, or in connection with a business transfer.

Your garage data is not shared with other Motor Log AI users.

6. Payments

In the App: Motor Log Pro is an auto-renewable subscription sold through Apple’s In-App Purchase (StoreKit). Apple processes payment. We receive subscription status so the App can unlock Pro.

Optional web checkout: Some users may purchase through RevenueCat Web Billing in Safari. That purchase is completed on the web, not through Apple. Apple is not responsible for the privacy or security of purchases made on the web. We receive entitlement status after checkout so Pro can unlock in the App.

We do not store full payment card numbers.

7. Data retention and account deletion

We retain account and garage data while your account is active.

You can delete your account in the App (Account → Delete Account). Deletion:

  • Removes synced garage data we control (Firestore and Firebase Storage photos)
  • Deletes your Firebase Authentication account (Apple token revocation is attempted when Sign in with Apple applies)
  • Cancels Motor Log Pro where we can (RevenueCat Web Billing immediately)
  • Removes Pro entitlements in the App
  • Erases local on-device garage and photo cache we control

App Store subscriptions must be confirmed cancelled in Apple’s subscription settings, which the App presents during deletion. Residual backups or logs may persist for a limited period. Payment records retained by Apple and RevenueCat are subject to their policies and legal requirements.

8. Security

We use reasonable administrative and technical measures, including authenticated access controls and Firebase security rules. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.

9. Children’s privacy

The App and Site are not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age where you live). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

10. Your choices and rights

  • Sign out or delete your account in the App
  • Skip providing a VIN, or enter year/make/model instead
  • Disable push reminders in Account settings and iOS Settings
  • Limit camera and photo access in iOS Settings
  • Manage or cancel Motor Log Pro through Account in the App, Apple’s subscription settings, or the billing flow provided at web checkout
  • Depending on where you live, request access, correction, or deletion by contacting us

11. International processing

Information may be processed in the United States and other locations where our providers (including Google Firebase, Anthropic, RevenueCat, Apple, and Imagin Studio) operate.

12. Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy. The “Last updated” date shows the latest revision. Continued use after an update means you acknowledge the revised policy.
